The Wall Street Journal talks coffee in Asia. Seemingly well researched – at least from a socio-economic-historical perspective – but I don’t think I would call Sumatra an obscure coffee growing region. Taiwan (I had no idea), Cuba? Sure, they’d qualify as relatively obscure in my book. Not Sumatra. Via theshot.coffeeratings.com

The Shot cuts through the cruft of those absurd Illy/Starbucks rumors: “Anytime someone tries to sell coffee in this country, the knee-jerk media presumption is that they’re going to ‘Take On Starbucks’™”.

Portion Size, Then Vs. Now – Waist sizes in the U.S. have increased right alongside portion sizes. Have you ever seen an old coffee cup? Maybe you’ve seen one at a garage sale and marveled at it’s diminutive size. Twenty years ago a “cup” of coffee was … well … a cup. 8oz. Makes sense. (via kottke)
Back to the alley / At a Hayes Valley salon of artists and designers, architects show links between back alleys and an organic new urbanism – Architect David Winslow wants to turn the alley in front of Blue Bottle Coffee’s Hayes Valley kiosk in San Francisco into an inviting plaza. I say yes.
Raw but Welcoming, a Space for Lofty Ideas – Architecture firm Sagan Piechota’s renovated office (and “salon” space as well, apparently) on Linden Lane. What about this has anything to do with coffee? Oakland’s very own Blue Bottle Coffee has their seminal foray into a proper café location – the Hayes Valley kiosk – right down below. Yeah, I want to work there too.
